Cannot start Microsoft Office Outlook, Unable to open the Outlook window

Synopsis: When you open Outlook you get this message and Outlook disappears

"Cannot start Microsoft Office Outlook, Unable to open the Outlook window.
The set of folders could not be opened. The server is not available.
Contact your administrator if this condition persists."

Solution:
1. Click on Start
2. Open Run
3. Type or Copy Pest "Outlook.exe /resetnavpane"
4. Press Enter or Click OK

Split a word document into separate files

Here is a macro that can automatically split a large word document into several small ones.

1. Open you word file
2. Go to the View Tab > Macros > View Macro (or press ALT + F8)
3. In the Macro name box, type split
4. Click Create to open the Visual Basic Editor
5. Overwrite the newly created split subroutine with the code below
6. Create a tmp directory in drive c:

Google secrets - Less Known Google Pages and Funny Google Search Items

Google Easter eggs

Various Google services hides Easter eggs meant to be amusing entertainment.

Searching for "the loneliest number" will make the calculator answer 1.
Searching for "the answer to life, the universe, and everything" will make the Calculator answer 42, a reference to Douglas Adams's novel The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. In order for this Easter egg to be successful the phrase must be entered in lowercase and without the quotation marks. The same reference is made when speaking to an artificial intelligence called meliza next to "the face on Mars" in Google Earth. When the number 42 is typed, the AI produces the output "42 is the answer to the ultimate question about life, the universe, and everything."
Searching for "the number of horns on a unicorn" produces the answer "1" in the Calculator. (Google actually reads the strings "number of horns on a unicorn" and "answer to life the universe and everything" as numbers. One can also use these phrases in the calculator. For example searching for "number of horns on a unicorn usd in euro" produces the current dollar / euro course or searching for "answer to life the universe and everything*5" produces 210.)
Searching for "once in a blue moon" shows the result "1.16699016 × 10^-8 hertz".
Searching for "recursion" shows "Did you mean: recursion".
Google offers services in many languages, including several uncommon ones like Swedish Chef's Bork bork bork, Pig Latin, Hacker (usually known as leetspeak), Elmer Fudd, Klingon and Pirate
When asked how to get from a location in North America to a location in Europe or Africa, Google Maps included the instruction "Swim across the Atlantic Ocean". This Easter egg is now removed.
When asked for directions from North America to Australia or island in the Pacific ocean Google Maps includes the instruction "Kayak across the Pacific Ocean". This also works in Google Earth.
When asked for directions from Japan to China, Google Maps includes the instruction "Jet ski across the Pacific Ocean"
The measurement tool in Google Earth allows users to measure distance in smoots, a unit of length derived from a tradition at MIT.
Taking the term Easter egg literally (and perhaps to celebrate the Easter holiday), Google has an official Easter Eggs page.
If one sets the iGoogle theme to the "Beach" option, then at 3:14 AM every morning, the Loch Ness Monster surfaces for 1 minute, then at 3:15 dives back under. The reason for the timing of 3:14 is rumoured to be a tribute to the number pi. Additional 3:14 eggs include the "Seasonal Scape" showing off the Northern Lights, the "City Scape" with UFOs, the "Spring Scape" with a monster, and the "Tea House" that has spirits in the mist.

In Chrome, Google's Web Browser, entering "about:internets" into the address bar brings up a copy of the Windows Screen Saver 3D Pipes, with the title "Don't Clog the Tubes". In the event that this does not occur due to the fact that the screensaver file does not exist in the system, the browser will instead display a gray screen with the title "The Tubes are Clogged!" This has been removed as of the 2.0.169.1 release.
The Google Gear's Firefox add-on description line reads "These are the gears that power the tubes! :-)"
- The above two easter eggs allude to former Senator Ted Stevens' "series of tubes" speech on the Senate floor.
In Google's iPhone and iPod touch search application, swiping downwards (past About) repeatedly in the 'Settings' interface brings up a hidden menu item, called Bells and Whistles, allowing customization of colors, sounds and more within the app. This is now standard on the newest update.
Entering the term "table" into Google Translate for Spanish to English will return "Is there a striptease bar in the town?" as a definition.
On the Suggest a feature page for Gmail, it shows "Have Gmail do the laundry" as a suggestion
Searching "ascii art" will turn the Google logo into ASCII art.

Event ID:1030

Windows cannot query for the list of Group Policy objects. Check the event log for possible messages previously logged by the policy engine that describes the reason for this.

Event ID: 1058

Windows cannot access the file gpt.ini for GPO CN={31B2F340-016D-11D2-945F-00C04FB984F9},CN=Policies,CN=System,DC=,DC=. The file must be present at the location <\\DOMAIN.EXT\sysvol\DOMAIN.EXT\Policies\{31B2F340-016D-11D2-945F-00C04FB984F9}\gpt.ini>. (Access is denied. ). Group Policy processing aborted.

These event log are driving me crazy for last 2hrs, finally I got the solution.

First of all what is this CN={31B2F340-016D-11D2-945F-00C04FB984F9}?
{31B2F340-016D-11D2-945F-00C04FB984F9} is default domain policy
(http://support.microsoft.com/kb/216359)

Solution

Try accessing the following location while logged on to the server which is
having the problem Vs the server which is not seeing the problem.

\\DOMAIN.EXT\sysvol\DOMAIN.EXT\Policies\ {31B2F340-016D-11D2-945F-00C04FB984F9}\gpt.ini

On the server which is seeing the errors and we are not able to access the
following share, please ping the domain and see which domain controller is
responding and see if we are able to access that DC doing a \\dcname

If accessing
\\DOMAIN.EXT\sysvol\DOMAIN.EXT\Policies\ {31B2F340-016D-11D2-945F-00C04FB984F9}\gpt.ini
fails, please try accessing the same file going to the \\DOMAIN.EXT
and then locating the file.

Also check SYSVOL permission settings as described in MS KB 290647 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290647)

If all of these are successful and we are still seeing the error message.
Then, there should be a problem with the DFS cache as it didn't get pruged on
the client.

to purge the cache, please use the resource kit utility DFSUTIL

Go to command prompt and run these commands

C:\>dfsutil /purgemupcache
C:\>gpupdate /force

Now check event viewer , You should have event log 1704

Security policy in the Group policy objects has been applied successfully.

But you access this from an Excel workbook saved as an interactive web page. If you have excel 2000 there are good chances that other two are also present. Just give it a try.

Steps

1. Open a new Excel workbook.
2. Select File * Save as Web Page
3. In the Save As dialog, select 'Publish Sheet' and 'Add Interactivity'
4. Save to an htm file on your hard drive (any file name).
5. Open the htm file with Internet Explorer.
6. Scroll to the cell WC2000 and then scroll the sheet such that cell "WC2000" is the first cell on the left. Now Highlight the entire row by clicking on the row number of the left edge.
7. Press Crtl+Alt+Shift and click the Office logo in the upper-left corner.
8. Your screen will be transformed into an auto racing game, with developer credits visible on the roadway.

If you use Joomla, if you forget your admin username or password, you can change it easily with a simple MySQL query. The most convenient way to manage the database is through the phpMyAdmin tool. Go to your cPanel and click on phpMyAdmin in the Databases box. (If you are not using cPanel or do not have phpMyAdmin, you can run the query directly for Joomla's database.)

Once in the phpMyAdmin select the Joomla's database from the drop-down menu at left. The page will refresh and the database's tables will be displayed on it. Open the SQL tab (look at the top navigation bar).

In the text field write the following SQL query:

UPDATE `jos_users` SET `password` = MD5( 'your_password' ) WHERE `jos_users`.`username` = "admin" ;

"your_password" - replace this with the new password you wish to use.
"admin" - replace this if your admin username is different.

Once you are ready, click on the GO button to submit the query. If everything goes fine without errors, you should be able to login to Joomla with the new password.

Note: These instructions are valid both for Joomla 1.5 and Joomla 1.0.*.

Removing Dual Boot Linux or Vista with is tricky because of their Bootloders. Many times I receive SOS message regarding it.
Situation: You have installed Linux or Vista with windows XP and letter need to uninstall it. Or (in most of case) you already formatted that VISTA/Linux partition and unable to Boot XP.

What You Need: Bootable XP CD

Boot Computer from CD Driver (Make CD Driver first bootable device of use BIOS boot menu)

When your computer start from XP CD it will prompt for Pres any Key to Boot from CD .., Press Enter

After some time you will see a screen similar to this

If it is asking for “Which windows installation you want to log?” provide 1/2/3 according to shown in list above (if not sure type 1) and press enter. Windows 2003 terminal service Crack / Hack / Bug

In Windows 2000, Terminal Services only included a "Per Device" licensing mode.
This means if you have 5 people sharing 1 workstation and they all use TS on a server, they only require 1 TS CAL. However in today's world of throw away computers and telecommuting, the reality is most companies will have more than 1 "device" (computer) per employee. This means for 1 power user you may have to supply 2 or 3 TS CALs. This obviously isnt fair. Microsoft made up for this partly in 2000 by letting 2000 Pro or XP Pro machines connect to a 2000 TS Server effectively for free. TS CALs for these devices come from an unlimited pool on the TS Licensing Server automatically.

Microsoft was pressured in Windows 2003 to introduce a Per User licensing mode as it was expected that an XP Client license would no longer include a TS CAL. This would allow 1 Power User to use as many PCs as they wanted while consuming only 1 TS CAL. Since companies now have to pay for EVERY TS CAL in 2003, this made alot more sense.

Well with all the feature updates in 2003 Server, someone forgot to "finish" the Licensing Code for Per User. (In theory all they had to do was assign a CAL to the user's SID, but in workgroups this may not work as expected, so who knows).
Well rather than pulling the (expected) Per User licensing mode, Microsoft released it in such a way that it barely works.

In a Per Device mode, the TS Licensing server has to have 2 things.
1) Needs to be "Activated" (This registers the TS Lic server with MS, but its totally free)
2) Needs to have Per Device TS CALs added to the Licensing Server

However, in Per USer mode, the TS Licensing server only needs #1.
What? You dont beleive me? Check this URL:

- Look in the section called "Client License Distribution Per User"
- Notice that section is VERY short and read the first sentence as its specifically says "must be able to locate a license server" as the only requirement.

The caveat to this is 2003 defaults to Per Device mode and needs to be changed to Per User mode in order use (exploit) this feature (bug).

To change your licensing Mode:
- Launch Terminal Server Configuration from Administrative Tools.
- Select Server Options on the left
- Double Click Licensing Mode on the right. Change the mode to Per User and then reboot.
NOTE: If you are adding TS and your source disk was 2003 with SP1 integrated, you will actually be prompted for your licensing mode and licensing server discovery method during the install. This makes it alot easier.

Something not documented very well in the white paper is also the easiest way to point your TS Server at a specific Licensing server. If you don't have TS Licensing setup in AD properly and your TS Licensing server is NOT on the same subnet as the Licensing server, this is the fastest and easiest way to force the TS Server to see the Licensing Server.

Add a Registry key (not a Reg Entry but a Key (looks like a folder)) like the following.
You will probably need to add the LicenseServers key as well.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\TermService\Parameters\LicenseServers\LICSERVERNAME
Where LICSERVERNAME is the name of your License Server. It can also be the IP or FQDN of the License Server if need be. This KB Article explains it:

Just keep in mind that if you do this at your company, and you ever get audited by MS and they find you dont have any Per User TS CALs at least purchased, your going to be in some serious trouble. The funny part is they dont have an easy way to tell how many your supposed to have purchased anyway because the licensing is broken and cant track valid licesnes properly anyway.

I personally found this all out because I put 1000 Per User TS CALs on my Licensing Server my company purchased. Several months later after I pointed 30+ TS Servers at this license server (all in Per User Mode of course), I was surprised to find it said I had Zero issued and 1000 still available. I opened a case with MS where they embarrassingly explained to me this glitch.

How to delete or cancel hung print jobs in Windows

How to clear the print queue in Windows when all the jobs get “stuck” and none of the jobs can be deleted.

It's easy enough to cancel a print job in the queue - you simply right-click it and select "cancel," after which the print job status commences to display "deleting..." After which you normally expect the print job to cancel and disappear so you can resume printing, correct? Unfortunately, often the print job will hang and prevent you from continuing to print anew from that same printer.

How to forcefully delete print job

1. Go to Start, Control Panel and Administrative Tools. Double click on Services icon.

2. Scroll down to the Print Spooler service and right click on it and select Stop. In order to do this, you need to be logged in as Administrator. At this point, no one will be able to print anything on any of the printers that are being hosted on this server.

3. Next you need to go to the following directory: C:\WINDOWS\System32\spool\PRINTERS. Delete all the files in this folder. This will clear all print queues (it’s a good idea to first make sure there are no other print jobs being processed on any of the other printers on the server because doing this step will delete those jobs also)

4. Now you can go back to the Services console and right-click and choose Start for the Print Spooler service.

You can also go to a command prompt and type net stop spooler or net start spooler to start and stop the service.

Since we have implemented File Server Resource Manager on our new Windows 2003 r2 server we are getting these cryptic errors every day. After lot of goggling I have found only these links

Today suddenly after comparing it daily occurrence I got reason behind it. In our scenario this error is logged everyday between 4 to 5 am which is time of File server backup (which is dome through Symantec Backup Exec). Migrating from SBS 2003 SP1 to 2003 Standard R2

If you don't want to buy Transition Pack, you can setup a new Windows 2003 server in the SBS domain and set it as additional DC. And then use FSMO role transfer method to transfer all the roles from SBS 2k3 server to Windows 2003. Migrate all AD information, user profile, database and service such as DNS and DHCP you need from the server.

For the share folder information, you could just use copy command. For the Exchange information, you could use Exchange Migration wizard or use Exmerge utility. For the client workstation, you need to update the Exchange server location.

I would like to list the detail steps to upgrade SBS 2003 to Windows 2003 server:

0. Start the installation of Windows 2003 on a new hardware. Once the operating system is installed, the server will reboot.

a. On the Windows 2003, configure a static IP on the LAN network card and make sure to point DNS to the old SBS server hosting active directory zone.

b. Run DCPROMO on the new Windows 2003 server to join it into the existing domain, do not create a new forest, and do not create a child domain. Install DNS, do not change any DNS settings yet.

1. Set the New Server as GC (Global Catalog Server). To set a DC as a GC, you can follow the steps in the following MS Knowledge Base article:

2. Remove Exchange attributes (not mailbox) from all users by choose the Exchange Task in "Active Directory Users and Computers". If you find that you only have the three items (Delete Mailbox, Move Mailbox and Enable Instant messages.), you can just ignore them. This step is only to make sure to remove all other attributes you have configured for users.

3. Stop DHCP on SBS 2003, install DNS (make it AD Integrated so that it will replicate all DNS information from the SBS server) and DHCP on the new Windows Server 2003 server and then configure the DHCP scope the same as SBS 2003.

4. Configure the new server to point to itself for DNS. Configure all the client computers to point to the new server as DNS. If you are using DHCP to issue DNS server settings, you should configure your new DHCP server to reflect the changes.

5. After making sure the clients can successfully log on, open Active Directory Users and Computers, connect to the new server and remove the SBS 2003 server account from the Domain Controllers container.

6. Take the old SBS server offline.

Then you can format the old server and install Windows server 2003 server. After you installed OS and join the box to domain, you can install exchange server 2003 in the box and import the mailboxes from the PST files (if you have export the mailboxes

* Two windows 2000 or windows 2003 servers (I have played with the trial version of windows 2003 server, but I think 2000 srv would do the job just fine)

* The 'replmon.exe' utility

* Patience (a lot ! especially if you have a slow link between the two sbs's)

Okay, let's begin (Make sure you follow the steps below for each domain ;) ) :

* Configure your SBS DNS server to allow dynamic updates (you will need this in order to add an additional dc) - I have even switched from ad-integrated mode to standard primary to avoid ad replication issues. Make sure each dns server contains a slave zone for it's partner dns zone, so one SBS can locate the other SBS

* Add each SBS WINS server as a replicating partner (so pre-windows 2000 clients will be able to locate the other domain)

* If you intend to play with w2k3, upgrade your sbs ad schema (run adprep /forestprep followed by adprep /domainprep from the i386 folder on your w2k3 cd or mapped network drive). Make sure you meet requirements for running adprep (you need to have your sbs at sp2 level or more, or have the needed patches - see http://www.petri.co.il/win2003_adprep.htm or better http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=331161). I was in sp3 and it worked fine

* Install the additional server (do not install a dns server, it will make things go slower because you will need to wait for dns replication)

* Make sure your new server is using only sbs dns as it's dns server

* Go through dcpromo

At this point you should have two domain controllers in your sbs forest

Now comes the interesting part.

As you all know, the sbs is a global catalog, and it is handling all 5 fsmo roles.

The trick is to move all the roles to your brand new additional dc, do the same within the other domain, establish the trust relationship, transfer the roles back to sbs's and demote the temporary servers.

Using ntdsutil, move all 5 fmso roles ( i know it might be only one that matters, but do not know yet wich one - I think the pdc emulator ?)

* at ntdsutil prompt, type:

roles
connections
connect to server NEW_DC (where NEW_DC is the name of the new temporary dc)
quit
transfer rid master
transfer pdc
transfer domain naming master
transfer infrastructure master
transfer schema master
quit
quit

I have also made new dc a global catalog, just to make sure I do not depend on sbs2k at all ;)
Of course there are other ways to transfer the fmso roles, but I like it this way, I come from linux world and I like typing :P

Now comes the patience part

* You have two choices. Either wait for the normally replication, or manualy initiate it. To check how each server knows about server roles, I have used the fsmo.vbs script (found at http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/default.asp?url=/technet/scriptcenter/compmgmt/ScrCM24.asp). For manual replication I have used the 'replmon' utility found under \support\tools folder on the install cd and Active Directory Sites and Services mmc snap-in.

* After you make sure that the fsmo roles have transferred to the new dc... go and create your trust as you normally would (note: do this operation on the new dc... not on sbs server!)
(For the really paranoid only: disconnect the sbs dc's from network before establishing the trust)

* Transfer back the roles to sbs

* Demote your new dc

* At this point all your MVP friends will still tell you "no, it's not possible, are you speaking about PTA ?" and eventually a Microsoft PSS will repeat saying that "Trust relatioinship is not supported in any SBS suites (SBS 4.0/4/5/2000/2003)"

But you don't care. You've just created a trust between two Small Business 2000 Servers, and yes, you see it working.

How to prepare the SBS domain for an additional R2 Domain Controller

There are several reasons for needing an additional Domain Controller. As it will hold a replica of the Active Directory, the Group Policies and login scripts etcetera, it can be used to serve a remote location like a branch office. The additional DC is also used in the Swing It migration from Jeff Middleton to migrate a domain while upgrading to a newer SBS version or new hardware. It doesn't matter if you are still running SBS 2000 or SBS 2003 with or without R2, you will need to prepare the AD Forest as described in this article.

You can NOT use the SBS media for installing an additional server or Domain Controller, you will need to purchase a plain Windows 2003 server license and media. As you can only get R2, you will be looking at upgrading the Active Directory Schema, as it is different from Windows 2003 server RTM.

You will need the second R2 CD from the plain Windows 2003 R2 server media kit and use that on the SBS server. You need to login as the administrator on the server.

1. Open the command prompt on the SBS server and navigate to the CD drive. Then navigate to the Adprep folder with: cd CMPNENTS\R2\Adprep

2. Type the following command to prepare the Active Directory Forest: adprep /forestprep

3. Assuming there are no Windows 2000 domain controllers that are not up to date with SP4, type C and press Enter:

Attach your hard disk to another system, or if this system is multi boot than boot other OS, or boot with bootable cd or floppy which can understand NTFS. go to %systemroot%\repair of the OS which you have forgotten the password. You will get the file named (sam). Copy this sam file to %systemroot%\system32\config restart your pc & enjoy. there is no password.

Note: %systemroot% is an environment variable which correspond to installation location of your windows, typically c:\windows in Windows XP, 2003 and c:\winnt in 2000.

I am assuming that this is your own PC (which means you have full physical assess to it). There are so many ways to break Windows XP password in this blog I am writing the easiest one which any geek can use.

Requirements:

1. Bootable Windows XP CD with CD key.
2. Working CD/DVD drive
3. Little bit mind

Here are the steps:

0. Take a printout of this article so you can follow the steps during whole process.
1. Place your Windows XP CD in CD ROM and start your computer. Wait until you are prompted “Press any key to boot from cd…” (I am assuming that CD is bootable is its boot priority is higher than Hard Disk if can’t understand this put your comment with email ID)
2. Press any key of your keyboard.
3. Now you can see information about setup is loading files….
4. When you get to the Welcome to Setup screen, press ENTER to Setup Windows now
5. The Licensing Agreement comes next - Press F8 to accept it.
6. The next screen is the Setup screen which gives you the option to do a Repair.
It should read something like “If one of the following Windows XP installations is damaged, Setup can try to repair it”
7. Use the up and down arrow keys to select your XP installation (if you only have one, it should already be selected) and press R to begin the Repair process.
8. Let the Repair run. Setup will now check your disks and then start copying files which can take several minutes.
9. Shortly after the Copying Files stage, you will be required to reboot. (this will happen automatically – you will see a progress bar stating “Your computer will reboot in 15 seconds”
10. During the reboot, do not make the mistake of “pressing any key” to boot from the CD again! Setup will resume automatically with the standard billboard screens and you will notice Installing Windows is highlighted.
11. Keep your eye on the lower left hand side of the screen and when you see the Installing Devices progress bar, press SHIFT + F10. This is the security hole! A command console will now open up giving you the potential for wide access to your system.
12. At the prompt, type NUSRMGR.CPL and press Enter. Voila! You have just gained graphical access to your User Accounts in the Control Panel.
13. Now simply pick the account you need to change and remove or change your password as you prefer. If you want to log on without having to enter your new password, you can type control userpasswords2 at the prompt and choose to log on without being asked for password. After you’ve made your changes close the windows, exit the command box and continue on with the Repair (have your Product key handy).
14. Once the Repair is done, you will be able to log on with your new password (or without a password if you chose not to use one or if you chose not to be asked for a password). Your programs and personalized settings should remain intact.

Taking (ASR) Backup without floppy disk

An ASR set consists of a system backup and a 3.5" disk that lists the system files that are installed on the PC. If you don't have a 3.5" disk drive on your machine, you won't be able to create the ASR disk. However, you can still create an ASR disk by performing the following steps:

1. Run the ASR wizard, which is part of Windows Backup.
2. After you run the ASR Wizard, start Windows Explorer.
3. Navigate to the \%windir%\repair folder (e.g., C:\windows\repair).
4. Copy the asr.sif and asrpnp.sif files to a network location.
5. On a different networked computer that has a 3.5" disk drive, copy these files to a 3.5" disk and label the disk as your ASR disk.

Taking Automated System Recovery (ASR) Backup

If you run a Windows XP Pro or Windows Server 2003 computer and you wish to backup the system you can use a new feature called Automated System Recovery (ASR).

The ASR process allows to restore the system disk (usually the C: drive) including the Windows files, all Registry settings and all user programs and data, allowing to recover a completely crashed system. To use this procedure you must be able to boot the Windows XP Pro Setup-program from the installation CD-ROM.

During the restore process all data previously found on the System partition (usually C:) will be erased, then XP/2003 will be reinstalled, and the data from the ASR backup will be restored.

Create the ASR backup

In order to use ASR you first need to create the ASR backup. Follow these steps:

Run NTBACKUP.EXE from the Run command or from the Program Files > Accessories > System Tools.
When the program starts click on the ASR button to invoke it's wizard.
The Wizard will start with a Welcome screen, advising that a Backup and the ASR disk will be created. Click Next.
Choose a destination and filename for the ASR backup. Make sure you do NOT select A: as the destination (duh...) nor C:, and that you have at least 2GB of free space on that partition.
The "Completing the ASR Preparation Wizard" will appear.When you click Finish, the Wizard creates a backup of your system files. You will then be asked to insert a floppy disk. You will later use this disk and the backup to restore your System in an event of a major failure.
To close this wizard and to begin the backup, click Finish".
The system will create a list of all files and then start the backup processes, creating a disk-backup-file. Once the disk-backup is done, you will be prompted for a floppy disk (blank, formatted) to store some ASR-data. Use ASR to recover your system

In case all other methods to start the XP/2003 system fail, you can use the ASR backup and floppy disk to restore the system to the status as during the creation of the ASR backup.

Insert your Windows XP Professional Installation CD-ROM and boot from CD-ROM. If you get the message to "press any key to boot from CD...", press any key.
As soon as you see "Press F2 to run Automated System Recovery (ASR) ..." on the bottom line - press F2. You only have about 2 seconds to do so, so be prepared.
You will then be prompted to insert the ASR floppy disk. Do so.
You have for a few seconds still the time to abort the ASR process by pressing ESC.
Warning! The system will now start to format your C: drive. When it's done it will start with a process very similar to the XP installation.
After the file copying is done, the system will reboot and continue with the installation process, but it will not continue a complete installation. It starts the Automated System Recovery Wizard. This screen will wait for 90 sec, then it will continue automatically.
A screen will appear, asking you to confirm the location of the disk backup-file.
At the end of the ASR process, NTBACKUP.EXE is automatically used to restore the information on the C: drive.
After the process is over check to see if all data and settings have been restored properly.

QuickBooks User Access Rights Problem

IMPORTANT: The following procedures are intended ONLY for the system administrator, preferably a Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE). If you are not that person, please contact your system administrator for assistance.
These steps are intended to allow users with restricted or limited users access to basic QuickBooks functions without granting them Power User or Administrator privileges. If users who already have Power User or Administration privileges are receiving this error message, please refer to this QuickBooks Knowledge Base article.

Intuit strongly recommends that you create a current System Restore Point or System State Backup prior to making any of the changes listed below. The listed adjustments to the permissions are specifically targeted to QuickBooks. Always exercise extreme caution when editing the registry.

Database Maintenance Plans in SQL Server 2005

Problem
Database maintenance is vital to the health of an organization's data delivery infrastructure. In SQL Server 2005 Microsoft redesigned the method through which Database Maintenance Plans are created and managed. These plans can be created through a wizard in SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS). They are handled mainly through the Business Intelligence Studio (BIDS), and custom plans can be created in BIDS using SSIS. Although the process is comprehensive, the management of physical backup files is not automatically handled in the Database Maintenance Plan Wizard, but history cleanup is completed. In this tip we will outline a number of methods that are available to manage these files.

Solution
Let's first talk about the process involved in creating a Database Maintenance Plan. You create maintenance plans in BIDS, just as you would create any other SSIS package. Here are the maintenance tasks available in SSIS:

Of particular interest are the two tasks highlighted above-the History Cleanup Task and Maintenance Cleanup Task. The History Cleanup Task deletes maintenance information generated prior to a specified date in the msdb database. One new and much appreciated feature in the tasks themselves is that you can view the T-SQL statement to be issued when the task is executed. Here is the History Cleanup Task and associated T-SQL statement:

The Maintenance Cleanup Task is a way of deleting physical backup files, although this task can be used to clean up other files as well. Here is what the Maintenance Cleanup Task looks like, along with its T-SQL statement:

You can customize each of these tasks by using an Expression or use the T-SQL statement as a scheduled job per se'. One thing to note about the Maintenance Cleanup Task is that it is not added to a maintenance plan when using the Database Maintenance Plan Wizard in SSMS. To add this task to an existing maintenance plan, right-click the plan in SSMS and choose Modify:

You can add additional steps to the plan by dragging and dropping a task over to the screen. In this case we'll add a Maintenance Cleanup Task to it:

Once you add the task to the plan you have to add more information: the server connection, the folder where the backup files are housed, the file extension you want it to delete, and time span. In addition you must add a Precedence Constraint to the task so that the order of task execution is maintained:

There are other alternatives to deleting the physical backup files, but perhaps the safest is to run a vbscript on a daily basis. Here is a sample script that deletes files whose date last modified is over 30 days:

Troubleshooting NTLDR is Missing Error

Cause:

1. Computer is booting from a non-bootable source.

2. Computer hard disk drive is not properly setup in BIOS.

3. Corrupt NTLDR and/or NTDETECT.COM file.

4. Misconfiguration with the boot.ini file.

5. Attempting to upgrade from a Windows 95, 98, or ME computer that is using FAT32.

6. New hard disk drive being added.

7. Corrupt boot sector / master boot record.

8. Seriously corrupted version of Windows 2000 or Windows XP.

9. Loose or Faulty IDE/EIDE hard disk drive cable.

Solutions:

Computer is booting from a non-bootable source

Many times this error is caused when the computer is attempting to boot from a non-bootable floppy disk or CD-ROM. First verify that no floppy diskette is in the computer, unless you are attempting to boot from a diskette.

If you are attempting to boot from a floppy diskette and are receiving this error message it is likely that the diskette does not have all the necessary files and/or is corrupt.

If you are attempting to install Windows XP or Windows 2000 and are receiving this error message as the computer is booting verify that your computer BIOS has the proper boot settings. For example, if you are attempting to run the install from the CD-ROM make sure the CD-ROM is the first boot device, and not the hard disk drive.

Second, when the computer is booting you should receive the below prompt.

Press any key to boot from the CD

Important: When you see this message press any key such as the Enter key immediately, otherwise it will try booting from the hard drive and likely get the NTLDR error again.

Note: If you are not receiving the above message and your BIOS boot options are set properly it's also possible that your CD-ROM drive may not be booting from the CD-ROM properly. Verify the jumpers are set properly on the CD-ROM drive.

Additional information: This error has also been known to occur when a memory stick is in a card reader and the computer is attempting to boot from it. If you have any type of card reader or flash reader make sure that no memory stick is inside the computer.

Computer hard disk drive is not properly setup in BIOS

Verify that your computer hard disk drive is properly setup in the BIOS / CMOS setup. Improper settings can cause this error.

Corrupt NTLDR and/or NTDETECT.COM file

Windows 2000 users

If your computer is using Microsoft Windows 2000 and you are encountering the NTLDR error. Create the below boot.ini file on the floppy diskette drive.

Copy the NTLDR and NTDETECT.COM files from another computer using the same Operating System. Both of these files are located in the root directory of the primary hard disk drive. For example, C:\NTLDR and C:\NTDETECT.COM should be the locations of these files on many computers.

Please keep in mind that these files are hidden system files. Once these files have been copied to a floppy diskette reboot the computer and copy the NTLDR and NTDETECT.COM files to the root directory of the primary hard disk drive. Below is an example of what commonly should be performed from the A:\> drive.

copy ntldr c:
copy ntdetect.com c:

After the above two files have been copied, remove the floppy diskette and reboot the computer.

Windows XP users

1. Insert the Windows XP bootable CD into the computer.

2. When prompted to press any key to boot from the CD, press any key.

3. Once in the Windows XP setup menu press the "R" key to repair Windows.

4. Log into your Windows installation by pressing the "1" key and pressing enter.

5. You will then be prompted for your administrator password, enter that password.

6. Copy the below two files to the root directory of the primary hard disk. In the below example we are copying these files from the CD-ROM drive letter "E". This letter may be different on your computer.

copy e:\i386\ntldr c:\
copy e:\i386\ntdetect.com c:\

7. Once both of these files have been successfully copied, remove the CD from the computer and reboot.

Misconfiguration with the boot.ini file

Edit the boot.ini on the root directory of the hard disk drive and verify that it is pointing to the correct location of your Windows Operating System and that the partitions are properly defined.

Attempting to upgrade from a Windows 95, 98, or ME computer that is using FAT32

If you are getting this error message while you are attempting to upgrade to Windows 2000 or Windows XP from Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows ME running FAT32 please try the below recommendations.

1. Boot the computer with a Windows 95, Windows 98 or Windows ME bootable diskette.

2. At the A:\> prompt type:

sys c:

3. After pressing enter you should receive the "System Transferred" message. Once this has been completed remove the floppy diskette and reboot the computer.

New hard disk drive being added

If you are attempting to add a new hard disk drive to the computer make sure that drive is a blank drive. Adding a new hard disk drive to a computer that already has Windows installed on it may cause the NTLDR error to occur.

If you are unsure if the new drive is blank or not try booting from a bootable diskette and format the new hard disk drive.

Corrupt boot sector / master boot record

It's possible your computer's hard disk drive may have a corrupt boot sector and/or master boot record. These can be repaired through the Microsoft Windows Recovery console by running the fixboot and fixmbr commands.

Seriously corrupted version of Windows 2000 or Windows XP

If you have tried each of the above recommendations that apply to your situation and you continue to experience this issue it is possible you may have a seriously corrupted version of Microsoft Windows. Therefore we would recommend you reinstall Microsoft Windows 2000 and Windows XP.

If you are encountering this issue during your setup you may wish to completely erase your computer hard disk drive and all of its existing data and then install Microsoft Windows 2000 / Windows XP.

Loose or Faulty IDE/EIDE hard disk drive cable

This issue has been known to be caused by a loose or fault IDE/EIDE cable. If the above recommendation does not resolve your issue and your computer hard disk drive is using an IDE or EIDE interface. Verify the computer hard disk drive cable is firmly connected by disconnected and reconnecting the cable.

If the issue continues it is also a possibility that the computer has a faulty cable, try replacing the hard disk drive cable with another cable and/or a new cable.
